Interesting read. Fair review from an actual fan.

This guy's problem is that it's not political enough? Are you fucking kidding? Literally everything in our lives is political now and you want your favorite band to play to your echo chamber? No thanks. I'd rather listen to a man talk lovingly about family and about a girl he loves than him saying fuck Trump every god damn second.

I enjoy the escape of music. It was a good read and well written but this guy has spent too much time working at NPR. I have to come in and out of the news/politics because if I pay attention daily it will drive me insane. It's no masterpiece and I do think that the lyrics are definitely lacking but the album is getting better on second listen.

Re: NPR Review of Come Tomorrow

I didn't like the review. In his conclusion, he claims he didn't approach CT hoping for Dave to be political. Buuuuut for the entire review, he complains that Dave has somehow "abandoned" politics in the most dire times.

I have two main problems with this:

    1) The guy obviously misinterpreted the song Come Tomorrow. He says Dave and "all the adults" have given up, which he then extrapolates to say that Come Tomorrow (the album) is some sort of "fuck it, I don't care any more" message. I read the song as a very straightforward "pass the torch to the youth" song (not a "fuck it, we're done. Kids come save us"). Sort of like Raven, but not subtle at all. I don't understand how you could fail to understand the messaging on a song that's so straightforward.

    2) The guy acts like EVERY song Dave wrote before 2018 was Cry Freedom... Buddy, most of Dave's earliest songs weren't political statements. If you want 100% of every album to be a political statement, there aren't many artists out there for you.

Also, to clarify, I'm liberal as fuck and I love NPR

This. Did not agree with this article at all. And Dave isn't checking out and retreating to the sidelines. If he was doing that, there would be no album at all.

Ah, "objective" NPR. Let the left continue to consume themselves.

    This is a terrible take.

Reviews are always one person's perspective.

It's someone writing for NPR clamoring for more social justice and politics in the album. Fits the narrative.

Pretty sure this guy's point was that Dave doesn't write topical music anymore, whether it relates to politics or anything else. He writes nonsense.

I'll say two last things since this is your site.

    1) I couldn't disagree with you more.

    2) If you'd like to continue the conversation, I'm happy to meet you in the Trump thread.

Re: NPR Review of Come Tomorrow

The writer is shocked / bummed that 51 year old Mr. Matthews isn't Childish Gambino on the new record? That's one hell of a starting point.

Maybe spend a few hours with the trove of unreleased gems of the past 5-10 years before penning sweeping generalizations about the band's artistic ceiling or drive.

Also, I get tired of the false dichotomy that this band has to chose between catering to the guy that wants to lay listening in a dark room and pondering the complexities of our times and catering to the lady that wants to get up and dance like there's no tomorrow in the aisles at the show. This band wrote Seek Up and Billies, The Dreaming Tree and Jimi Thing. DMB's has the rare DNA of making you think and making you dance.

This writer sounds like a jaded ex unpacking how the relationship went wrong. It's lazy for an NPR piece. But he has a future at Pitchfork for sure.

Neil Young is in his 70s and still making political music.

I'm not saying it's as culturally relevant as Gambino, just that age isn't a limiting factor.

I respect that this writer has been a fan for a long time, but he's drawing way too many conclusions about who Dave has become. Maybe people can care about about social issues without being social justice heroes...maybe sometimes people need to be reminded what all the fighting is for. This dude needs to take advice from Dave and realize 'all good things must come to an end some time', and good things are relative. The Band isn't the same as they were in the 90's and they never will be. 'Many changes have come and they will come again'. Change with the world or get off the ship.

Completely agree. I also don't remember the era when most of DMB's music was overtly political.

Also I guess the writer missed this:

    https://youtu.be/xvxtlihmoBI

    Or this:

    https://youtu.be/BllKY_g-PnM

There were people at the concert literally trying to sell me $15 save the fucking planet water bottles.

He could have explored that David against the backdrop of Can’t Stop Belly Jelly shake dat ass sexy MF Dave that’s riding a 7 album #1 streak.

    Or this David:

    https://youtu.be/fdPsXZNqKA8

    Or this:

    https://youtu.be/Vl5PbQ5ekM4

To pretend the Cry Freedom artist we grew up with vanished when a few YouTube clicks prove otherwise is lazy. It’s rare a true fan is given an opportunity to write that piece and he missed the real story—the search for 2018 David coexisting with the slick 2018 DMB money machine. It’s just disappointing.
