Re-listening to the Samurai Cop from 5/28/16 in Atlanta. That was a damn good version.

It truly is. Can't see how this song wouldn't blow up within the mainstream as a single given the power and emotion behind it. Would certainly bring the spotlight back on the band again...

    Let's calm down. It's a good song.

But nothing of theirs is going to "blow up within the mainstream"

Where would it even blow up? There's no real venue for it to blow up.

The radio. Top 100 Billboard Charts. Music channels.

Not sure how you can say "nothing of theirs is going to blow up within the mainstream" when they've experienced just that with other singles and albums throughout their career.

...I'll tell ya what that #EmployeeOfTheMonth award would certainly be in jeopardy if mgmt saw this type of post...

Big Whiskey did pretty well in the mainstream. No reason to think Samurai Cop couldn't do well. It has the lyrics and power to have that type of effect.

What radio station do you think this is going to "blow up" on?

Take a nice gander at this list, and tell me where you think DMB fits.

    https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100

Let's get a hold of of ourselves.

I'm sure it will get a lot of love on Kenny Chesney's Pool Time Rock Extravaganza on Sirius, but that's about it.

Cool thing with Billboard's website is you can look up an artist and see their history throughout their career in terms of peak spots.

    https://www.billboard.com/music/dave-matthews-band

    Most recently...

--You & Me peaked at #57 in 2010
--Funny The Way It Is peaked at #37 in 2009

Samurai Cop to me far surpasses those tunes. Not beyond the realm of possibility it performers better than those two...despite what happens to be popular now on the top 100.

Would you consider either of those to have "blown up"?

Do you think the music landscape on radio has changed in the last 8 years?

The last single that really had any major type of airplay was American Baby and even that wasn't really that huge.

Ed Sheeran, an acoustic artist, has the #1 song in the country right now so it's not like a DMB song doesn't have the chance. I think it was way harder for a single to get big during the BW or AFTW eras because the radio was dominated by "EDM" at the time.

I don't think Samurai Cop would be the single to do it though. They would have to craft a pop song just right and maybe find a good co-writer or producer that has a ton of #1's under their belt. Could you imagine Dave working with Max Martin?

Samurai Cop blowing up the airwaves? No chance man. For today's radio it would have to be something MUCH faster. Honestly, something like BBN.

It has a chance to be an epic studio song if it is done right. Probably my favorite "new" song, and definitely one I want to hear this summer. Bismarck also has a chance to be awesome in studio.

If it were to make the album I think Bismarck would be the best choice for the first single or maybe dyr. Both are more upbeat, kinda summertimeish, and have that dmb sound.
I'm surprised BBN was not the single off that album but maybe it had something to do with how it came out of the studio. It doesn't sound finished.

I hear what you're saying but Samurai Cop is so unique and captivating while still reminiscent of that core 'DMB sound' - it's such an emotionally powerful song and completely grabs you the first time you hear it. I think it would resonate with a lot of people and has the potential to be a really, really successful single.

Sam Cop is not my favorite of the new batch..BUT I agree above that this song recorded properly could be a big hit for DMB. I think what the song is about will hit home for a lot of old and new fans.

I heard it for the first time in Atlanta '16, and I was shocked how the song affected me...from the first notes through the entire song, I immediately got choked up, felt waves of emotion rush through me, and tears sprang to my eyes. I have NEVER had that happen to me before, and it was magical and amazing. Joy Begin, indeed.

I completely agree with your take about the emotional impact of SC and it's ability to resonate with a wide range of people and think it could be a successful single. However, I do think the first single needs to be something a little more infectious and danceable. Something that gets stuck in you head and makes you wanna move. That's why I figured Bismark, dyr, or even break free could work before the album to increase excitement, then a deeper track once the album drops. I can't see them doing SC as the lead single to promote a new album after it would have been played on a night show a year earlier, but I often wonder about decisions this band sometimes makes.

DYR could certainly be a solid single as well...I still think Sam Cop has the potential to be more successful on the radio. But all this rides on how they are recorded and the final studio product
