Re: What is the best produced studio song by DMB?
Dreaming Tree, The Stone, Tripping Billies, and also SMLAM. It's fucking incredible as a studio track. I'd throw in Beach Ball too. Man what I would give to hear a full album with Cavallo producing in the style he made Beach Ball, Little Red Bird, Cornbread, etc. I still think he's the band's best producer after Lillywhite and the Big 3.
I agree that the overall production on VITR is good, but I am ultimately disappointed because the song stagnates after the second chorus when Carter starts working the cymbals. The Charlottesville anniversary show was the best that song has ever been, it grows in intensity and progresses- and the last chorus feels so cathartic. That's missing on the album. Plus I want the background vocals at least somewhat standing out, it blends too much with everything else.
The Riff is a beautiful song but like a lot of AFTW for me, it falls so flat in production. It wants to be a huge rock song, but it can never get there. I think Lillywhite dropped the ball on where the songs wanted to go on that album.
