Re: If Only
I finally figured it out.
I can best describe If Only as being the Dr Jekkyl to Seven's Mr Hyde (or is it the other way around?). Either way.
The two come together to make one scary ass schizophrenic bipolor serial killer.
Seven is the deranged, crazy, messed up, dirty, filthy, lustful, hateful, vengeful persona of a seriously screwed up individual. This chick broke this guy's heart and the immediate response is pure deranged emotion and it gets ugly fast and the man's true colors are shown.
Then there is If Only. If Only is the 3 days after you fucked up and said shit you never should have said and so you come crawling back graveling and apologizing for all the ugly and horrible things you said and did. The guy sounds normal, sane, sincere and sweet but underneath of it all there is the undertone of desperation and creepiness that says "i'm sorry, i want you, and i'll do ANYthing to make that happen so don't you dare say no."
The songs even share an underlying groove. Seven, appropriately, is in 7/8 counts which gives that feeling of rushed, hurried, no time for thinking, just pure emotional reaction. Then If Only fills out the full count and sounds more intentional, deliberate, contrived/planned. It sounds nice and sweet but you want to believe it but something about it just screams "this ain't right man".
So there ya have it, my 'looking way too far into things' take on this song, which I think (the song) is awesome by the way. And even if this isn't the intent of the song, you'll never listen to it the same again.
