I was looking for a new lob wedge. I didn’t really know what I was getting.

But, I liked it. Hit several good sand shots, and a good approach. But also, I was completely unprepared for the bounce and hit several really bad chips.

Nice rounds Flynn. Way to hang in and score on the back. Leaving yourself a kick-in for your second put is always good.

I had the Cleveland version when I first started playing again. They’re great in the bunker. Definitely have limited use elsewhere, IMO.

There just isn’t a lot of sand on the public courses here. Huge weak spot in my game because I’ve never had to learn it.

How do you guys keep your energy up over 18 holes in the heat in terms of hydration and food?

Hydration doesn't start when you're sweating, it starts the day or two before.

When I played football I would put down like 3-4 gallons of water per day for the 2 or 3 days before a game.

Once you actually start sweating it's more about replenishment than getting hydrated. I usually pack 3-4 32 oz. powerade zero in my bag for this reason.

Usually a few bananas/protein bars/easily digestible carbs like nuts throughout the round helps.

    Damn - that's serious! lol.

I probably drink about 64oz of water through a round when walking. Depending on when I'm teeing off, food varies. Assuming I've eaten breakfast, I'm usually pretty light with snacks... maybe a bar, maybe a banana. Sometimes a PB sandwich.

Big breakfast burrito and water before the round, 8 heinekens on the course, another water at the turn, and I’m good.

    I ride though.

One thing about covid and golf - they don’t seem to give a shit about how big your cooler is (outside alcohol) anymore. Every round we have a big bag cooler We toss in the cart.

well if you're walking 18, pounding a bunch of beers (while fun) is not the solution lol

Yeah I mean I barely drink in general, don't drink while playing golf and think Heineken is pretty terrible anyway. I am always trying to keep ahead on hydration for kidney stone prevention anyway and get the whole idea of hydrating in advance from having run several marathons, just completely run out of energy still. It hasn't been this big of an issue other years, not sure if it's a post Covid / recovering from concussion thing. I was on the 14th hole yesterday and thought I was going to collapse, was seeing stars, playing partners asked if I wanted to sit down for a couple minutes as there was nobody behind us.

We still don’t have water on the course. Hard to stay hydrated without dropping money on water and gatorade at the turn.

I make sure to take in 2L (goolge tells me this is 68oz) per 9 if I'm walking. Mostly water, but usually some Gatorade too. Food wise is whatever I have at home to throw in my bag (Apples, granola bars etc etc) sometimes I'll grab a sausage at the turn but I usually play early in the morning, or twilight - not really 'sausage' hours.

It's super rare to see water provided on courses around here. You bring your own or you pay for it.

I try to drink a gallon of water the day before I play and try not to drink the night before. 2 big glasses of water in the morning and 2 glasses of black coffee with a light breakfast. Pack a 40oz water bottle and drink constantly and take whatever healthy snacks I find. Love to get a PB&J at the turn when available.

This summer has just been brutally hot. I sweat like crazy no matter the temperature. Been packing 2 extra shirts for 18 holes.

I can't seem to find the answer to this. What is the purpose of a sub zero 3 wood? I can see why you would want that in a driver, but don't you want a 3 wood to launch high and land softly with some spin?

Just a fitting tool to win Trackman contests, IMO.

Everyone has a low spin fairway option, and I’m sure they work for some people, but like you said you want the highest launching softest landing club you can find for the most part.

I usually have a breakfast sandwich and some coffee. I usually drink about 1/2 a gallon of water during the round, and then some right after. I walk, so it's hard to carry a lot.

I always try to eat very light before a round, don't like the feeling of being weighed down out there and snack on the course instead. Coffee in the morning is a must for 'reasons'.

On the course it's whatever small snack bars I bring from home, sometimes a couple string cheese in my cooler, and if I remember a bag of Jack Links Beef Jerky is a nice little snack out there and easy to handle cause of being resealable.

Always pack my own beer/seltzers + water and gatorade. Rarely have to buy.

I've discovered that my hand-eye coordination is very very sensitive to alcohol so I almost never drink on the course. seriously after just one beer I can shank a shot 50-75 yards offline with even the slightest lapse in concentration.

    lolol

A little 'swing juice' at the turn will usually help me if I'm playing poorly on the front. Mostly takes the edge off and dampens my focus, which can be beneficial when trying to do too much. Two 24oz Pacificos is the go-to.

What’s the deal with extra wraps on a gold grip?

Does this build up the grip more and make the circumference bigger for larger hands?

Not sure about the gold grip. I know that people use extra tape under the grip if they like a larger feel in the grip. I guess it could be because of people with larger hands as well. They also make thicker grips for people who have arthritis.

    Interesting.

I’m thinking of getting the Taylor made SIM max OS irons. 1 degree upright they said, 2 in long. PW - 5i, 4H, 3H

Game improvement irons, just what I need.

Should I stress too much over brand of shaft or grips? I know I need regular flex steel but after that I’m guessing all will perfect adequately for my game.

It kind of sucks they won’t customize older irons they still make. Seems like a scam to get you to buy the new stuff.

I wouldn't. From my experience steel shafts are pretty interchangeable. There is a difference in graphite, but for mid to high handicappers as long as you have the right flex you should be good.

I agree that they want you to buy the newest stuff. In my opinion the technology doesn't change enough from year to year to make that much of a difference. Once your stuff gets 5-10 years old you should think about upgrading. Less for wedges since they start wearing out.

I agree that they want you to buy the newest stuff. In my opinion the technology doesn't change enough from year to year to make that much of a difference. Once your stuff gets 5-10 years old you should think about upgrading. Less for wedges since they start wearing out.
My Cleveland TA 7s are from probably 2005. Wonder if I’ll see a difference

To be honest, they are fine irons. I hit a few pure shots last Monday that were awesome. But my 190-225 yard game is awful. I’m hoping the hybrids help. And hopefully if I get the driver it will add 20 yards off the tee. The difference between that 190 a more manageable 6 iron.

    Yeah, I'm sure you'll see a difference.

The hybrids will definitely help. Just swing them like you would an iron. Don't try to hit them like a driver.

I noticed hybrids don’t do the upright 1 degree thing like irons.

Honestly, it’s for guys who are really good, can feel the difference in 1 layer of tape, and have a lot of time on their hands and can tinker. Golf Pride makes grips that simulate extra tape on the bottom side if you want to try.

I’ve heard in better players it stops hands from turning over as fast, so it is an anti-left solution.
