HBO is making a series off the book, so excited

i was listening to an interview with brit bennett . she seems really down to earth. she talked a lot about the counter characters in reese and stella. what reese went through is pretty much the opposite of what “passing” is. also found it interesting that even when stella was “passing” with her new white life, she portrayed a lot of aspects of white supremacy... maybe to cover her tracks. reese remained a very kind hearted person, he never showed “toxic masculinity” traits, but appeared really genuine

I'm halfway through "American Carnage: On the Front Lines of the Republican Civil War and the Rise of President Trump". I needed a break from politics so I decided to order Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton, which inspired the musical. I have heard amazing things about it, excited to start it tomorrow night

You needed a break from politics so you went with a more dense book about American history that's about 3x harder to slog through.

    Masochist.

Well I'm currently obsessed with the Hamilton musical so I wanted to check out Miranda's inspiration for it. Plus the Revolutionary War period of history absolutely fascinates me, I have been meaning to do a deep dive on a lot of the Founding Fathers for a while now and this was the inspiration I needed.

that is super fascinating, didn't even think about reese like that. I thought she did a great job of bringing the supporting characters to life. I also found it interesting when kennedy made a comment about if she was born black, she would have been perfectly happy with it. which is obviously ignorant to the fact that being white gave her opportunities she otherwise wouldn't have had.

I also thought it interesting that both daughters had personality traits similar to their respective aunts, and not their own mothers (kennedy more so, with her interest in plays).

I already downloaded a few podcast episodes with brit / general discussion because I'm sure there are things I missed!

yes! and she truly believed she was a noble hero for choosing a “suffering” lifestyle (eye roll), instead of taking the path her parents wanted for her

    truly the worst.

I’m not sure! Thinking of maybe Freedom by Franzen (never read him before), I also just bought luster by raven leilani and exciting times by naoise dolan. how was three women? I bought that back when I read it was gonna be a showtime series. I tend to buy books way faster than I can read them.

    are you on goodreads?

luster is on my list as well!!

i enjoyed three women. go in with an open mind. I’d be interested in a males perspective. it can be quite sexually graphic at times, but I guess that’s a given when you pick up a book about female sexual desires
the storyline of the HS girl was by far the most interesting and the most infuriating. you can find newspaper articles on google about her and the teacher

I actually just started using goodreads a week ago!! ill PM you my account

Have you read All the Pretty Horses? The Crossing is part of Cormac McCarthy's 'Border Trilogy' -Meaning The Crossing is actually part 2 of a 3 part book series.

    1. All the Pretty Horses
    2. The Crossing
    3. Cities of the Plain

My favorite book of his is Blood Meridian (his masterpiece). I also really enjoyed Suttree. It's LONG but an excellent read.

I'm a fan of Franzen. Freedom is a good book, but I'd recommend starting with The Corrections and then reading Freedom. The Corrections is a fantastic read. His latest book 'Purity' was not very good.

Well shit. It had been on my shelf so long I didn’t read the cover summary referencing this. I really enjoyed the book despite having to stop and translate several of the Spanish conversations. CM not a big happy endings guy. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll keep my eyes open for those, but I’ll pick up any bargain I can find of his, as I enjoy his settings and style.

    Galveston by Nic Pizzolatto

About 100 pages in and I wish Cary Joji Fukunaga had given it a once over.

Do the audiobooks instead. Blood Meridian, Suttree, The Road, Outer Dark and Child of God are so worth a read. I enjoyed No Country for Old Men as well, but the movie worked better for me.

A Weekend in September by John Edward Weems

Book about the 1900 hurricane that struck Galveston killing over 6000 people. It was briefly mentioned in Nic Pizzolatos book, I've had this book on my shelf for a while, and a tropical depression is currently heading towards us, so it seemed like the logical next choice.

After a couple of failed attempts at The Stand this summer, I wanted some more Stephen King in my life, just not a world where someone is coughing and dying on every other page.

Re: What are you reading right now?

just finished american dirt, one of the best selling books of the year. the story is about a mexican mother/son trying to escape from a drug cartel and migrate to the US.

and holy shit, didn't realize how much controversy there is on this one.

initially the book got rave reviews (by NPR, NYT, selected in oprah's book club, bla bla bla). "the defining book of 2020!!!".

the first negative review that received a lot of attention was from myriam gurba (mexican writer)- her review is very harsh, but i recommend reading it, if you have read american dirt. she points out unrealistic stereotypes in the book, and how the protaganist (the mexican mother) "perceives her own country through the eyes of a pearl-clutching American tourist". another theme in the book was that USA=good/safe

the author (white) stated that she wrote the book because she wanted readers to know that the people coming to our southern borders are not one faceless brown mass, but singular individuals. many are offended at this comment- "get off your high horse!! we don't need you as a savior!", or, "she's writing a story that isn't hers"

the booktour for american dirt was cancelled because of threats

i'm not in the camp that writers must have a personal connection to whatever they chose to write about, but the uproar is interesting. the publisher spent a lot of money marketing this book (ie- oprah's bookclub, having celebs just as stephen king pose with it, etc), while latinx writers continuously get little attention from major publishers. there is now a push for this particular publishing company to have a greater representation of latinx writers

I remember reading about all the backstory on this one when it came out. What did you think of the book itself?
