Yes, the Yankee got lost in translation!
As you mentioned in a follow up post, I’m a limey and the Royal Academy of Music theory courses don’t count like that, I understand what you’re saying and missed the “of” because I am not used to counting quaver time like that.

First the dynamics - it's like he's lost the ability to play quiet, there's almost no difference between the 'ghost notes' and the main hits (on the snare). That's super important to me in a drummer, it indicates understanding of nuance and mastery of craft - I think he's lost a lot. But the main reason I brought up CIM was because of the two rhythms he has for the verse - it's like a schizophrenic thought up the rhythm (I don't want to call it a 'beat' because that diminishes it), in an exceptionally good way. Nobody - at least in popular music - plays two completely separate rhythms for a bar at a time and pulls it off. It's done with so much taste and feel and passion that comes thru due to dynamics mainly. I don't get any of the last three nowadays.
Those feelings go for a lot of my comparisons between older and newer carter
(btw VIRT chorus was one of my highlights of the album, because of Carter, it's interesting but it's not an innovative idea, unlike say post-41 chorus, or verse of CIM)

No, student of music theory, pianist, guitarist and viola - but if they, as you acknowledge might be the case, “sound similar” then logically they can’t be “totally not similar”, right? You may find as a drummer some small nuances that make one stand out, but all I said was CT’s verses remind me of CIM.
The dynamics on this one are shot, would be interesting to hear an unmastered version because there is an excessive amount of dynamic range compression at play here which could well affect all aspects of the performance.
I’m finding there is some audible distortion to COCO but haven’t had a chance to listen critically on my main system yet.
