Re: U2 Discussion

I love U2. Just recently finished the book U2 By U2 and thought it was an excellent read. I know I'm dating myself a bit here, but was fortunate enough to see them (almost front row, side stage right) on one of the last performances on the Joshua Tree tour, which was absolutely mind-blowing (the BoDeans opened and set the tone for an amazing evening). I saw them again on the Zoo TV tour in Denver and was once again blown away.

Since U2 endorse the trading of shows (as long as there is no profit to be had, or Bono says they'll kick your ass) here is a link to a great site with some excellent bootlegs for download:

http://u2-thespiralstaircase.blogspot.com/

I'm currently listening to Live in Tempe, AZ...

Topping this because I've recently rediscovered them after catching Rattle & Hum on Vh1 Classic.

I think my only big complaint about them (and you hardcore U2 fans will probably disagree) is that Larry and Adam aren't really all that great with their instruments. Particularly Adam though. I mean its not a huge problem, but I just wish he would do a little more than play root notes over and over and over. I mean imagine how much better U2 would be with a bassist like John Paul Jones (for example). Meh.

I suppose I can get over it. Pink Floyd is up there with my favorites and Waters was a terrible bassist (but I think they more than made up with it through the talents of Gilmour and Wright).

They aint No offense. I mean, yes the band has a distinct sound and they're great songwriters, but as far as impressive technical ability goes, Edge is really the only one remotely worth talking about. And even then, his style can (keyword: can) get repetitive sometimes. Same old bag of tricks with the delay/echo effect.

But they're a great band, dont get me wrong. Great songwriters. Great live energy. That's what matters.

Had to weigh in on a U2 thread! My second favorite band(do I have to mention #1?)

Whoever mentioned that they were told that U2 is overrated live should not take concert advice from that person again! (imo) I have seen them 4 times over the past 20 years and have been impressed every time, the only minor complaint is that they do not vary their setlists much at all, but that being said they ATTACK every song they play no matter how many times they have played it before and the crowd eats it up.

    My top 5 songs:

Until The End of The World
    One Tree Hill
    Kite
    Sunday Bloody Sunday
    Bad

I agree with this post. I love U2 and they are wonderful live. I've seen them twice and hope to see them again.

Yeah, and The Edge isn't that good either. What Adam and Edge do bring though is insanely catchy riffs and bass lines.

But if they had a little more skill, they would be out of this world.

You are wrong. The Edge is an extremely talented guitarist.

Well, I wouldn't say they suck. That's kind've ridiculous to say. They just don't have a huge role in the music.

He's not. Bono taught him how to play.

Again, he writes great riffs, but he doesn't have the ability to solo that well. He gets a lot of praise as being a "great" but he's not. He's good. He's way better than me, but he's not a "great."

He can solo well, but his music isn't about soloing. You can't judge a guitarist by whether he "jams" or not. That's not what U2's music is about.

I know that. I'm as big a U2 fan as you, don't get me wrong, but The Edge is not a guitar god. He just isn't. Is he a nice player? Of course. But he isn't some legend... that's all I'm saying.

I'm not saying he's a legend. I'm saying he's really good. Not just a "nice player." He writes and plays stuff that not many other people could.

I just listened to How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb for the first time in a while and it hit me how good that album is.

I know it took some beef with a few fans but there are some real winners on there. City of Blinding Lights, Man and a Woman, Crumbs From Your Table, One Step Closer and my favorite, Original of the Species.

    Very good album.

Huh? Bono barely knows three chords and admits it. I highly recommend the book U2 by U2, it follows each band member from when they were little kids up to present day and clearly defines what unique quality each band member brings to the stage. They freely admit that they are not classically trained musicians and that they can barely even cover another group's song; that's what forced them to come up with their own sound and to develop on their own individual strengths. Edge might not be able to solo or jam with the best of them, but it's really not that important. He will certainly be remembered as having one of the most incredibly distinctive sounds and hooks in rock and roll.

U2 has 3 musical masterpieces according to Rolling Stone Magazine. The !st is Joshua Trees, the 2nd is Actung Baby, and the 3rd is All That You Can't Leave Behind.
The best albumns that The Dave Matthews Band and U2 have recorded and released were produced by the same producer, Steve Lillywhite..U2 also had Daniel Langois co-producing..which happens to be the man who wrote the song the Maker, which Dave Matthews covers incredably well...so there is a common link between the 2 bands....
Under the Table and Dreaming and Crash were both produced by Steve Lillywhite

While I rarely agree with Rolling Stone, I think they pretty much nailed it; all three albums are among my favorites of all time.

I am a huge U2 fan (although I kinda have fallen out with them lately)

My first ever concert was Popmart '97 @ Soldier Field when I was 15, went with my Dad. Have seen U2 8 more times since then, all with my Dad!!! My uncle (RIP ) bought me Joshua Tree when I was like 8, who the fuck is U2 was my first thought, but today I cannot thank him enough!

My fav. U2 album is Unforgettable Fire, BY FAR their best work in my opinion (Lillywhite anyone?!)...obviously Joshua Tree & Achtung are incredible as well. I think Zooropa is by far their worst, and aside from a couple songs I like (Please, Gone, Wake Up Dead Man) I think Pop is a pretty crappy album.

But nothing tops a U2 concert, they are so incredible to see live!

100% agreed! I've seen a lot of live shows but nothing has ever topped seeing U2 live. For those unfortunate not to have ever had the opportunity, I highly recommend the Elevation Tour: Live from Boston. It's unbelievable. Here's a link:

    Ok...give me some advice.

I have a live recording of U2. It's ZOO Live from Sydney (the DVD). I had never really gotten into them and after watching/listening to this live recording I basically said "This band blows and I will never listen to them again." I basically wrote off this band as flashing lights and shitty music.

Please let me know if they indeed suck as bad as ZOO indicates or if I'm missing something. If this recording is generally indicative of the type and quality of their music then I'll just continue with my previous assumptions.

ZOO TV is definately not for everyone...I dont even like it that much...but like the above poster stated, pick up Elevation from Boston DVD or Vertigo from Chicago DVD (I was there!!) Both of these are way more indicative of true U2...although I personally feel that Rattle & Hum DVD is the best DVD they have, check that out

The best live U2, is really early U2....The Joshua Tree Tour was the first concert I ever went to back in september of 1987, when I was 15 years old....Bono's voice was incredable back then...he could really wail away and hit some really high notes....they would also through in cover tunes of the Beatles, Bob Marley, the Doors, and Curtis Mayfield
I would suggest watching the first Live Aid performance....The song Bad is just amazing and that's waht hooked alot of the fans that still follow them to this day.

Can't wait for their new album, which'll hopefully land mid-2008.
