Re: Lawncare/Landscape Thread

Rosebushes are the only part of landscaping I added myself, and 5+ years later, they are still alive without any special watering (beyond the 2-3 days a week I water my lawn)

You people are so white...like Hank Hill white.

I don't currently have a lawn, and I don't always have a lawn, but when I do, I redneck the fuck out of it, because, America, and fuck you.

On a serious note, I can make a lawn look like a baseball field or golf green with the right equipment and grass. Did this shit as a pro for a few season.

Thanks defcon, taking that as a compliment.

Had a nice mow yesterday...first one of the season where I didn't have to bag the clippings. No time to get the grub killer down though.

    Shut your filthy pie hole.

I haven't been able to mulch the clippings because my lawn has been growing too vigorously. We didn't have any rain last week, so there was less growth which meant I could mulch again, which makes my lawn happy.

I'm watering every other day since it's been so hot just to keep it green.

Reading up a little bit on mulching/composting...my pops always told me to bag the clippings when I cut my parents' lawn as a teenager so I've just been doing that at my new house the past few months.

Is there a proper method to it? I've got about 2-3 months' worth of clippings dumped in a pile in my woods, so I imagine there's some good composting going on back there. Do I just spread it with a rake and water? Trying to spruce my front up, put seed down Saturday in some patchy spots and fertilized the whole thing, watered yesterday as well.

I don't think I've ever not mulched - this includes the years that I mowed my father's lawn when I was a kid growing up.

I wouldn't do anything with the clippings you have stored up, leave them as is. When you are mowing, assuming you have a mulching mower/blade, you should not be bagging your clippings, you should be mulching them and returning them back to the soil as you mow. The only times you shouldn't doing this is if your lawn is overgrown, or if your lawn has some time of disease that you wouldn't want to spread.

Composting is very environmentally friendly - definitely encourage that.

I'll have to double check when I get home because I honestly never thought to look given that I'm a lifelong bagger, but I'm fairly certain my new mower has a side dispenser type thing which I'm assuming is for mulching. I'll look into it and give it a shot. Would definitely cut down on my time wheeling the barrow back to the woods to dump clippings.

Nah - most modern mowers have 3 settings.

    Bag
    Side discharge
    Mulch

Mulching is when the side discharge is capped off and there's no bag on.

Fair enough, thanks for the heads up scrocks. Still lots to learn as a novice homeowner. Definitely appreciate all the tips in this thread from some more seasoned veterans of the lawncare game!

I mulch whenever I can. I had to bag it Friday/Saturday though because the previous week was just bad timing of being out of town and tons of rain. Shit was so overgrown. It's not so much a pain for my back yard because I have a wooded area I can just walk to and dump. But for the front, I throw it on a tarp and then when that gets full I drag it to the back. Just a lot of stopping and starting.

I have three of these and they work well if you set them up right and on a straight portion of the run.

And so it begins...having 7 yards of topsoil delivered tomorrow so I can even out my backyard (currently no grass due to regrading), seed, and fertilize. Looking forward to putting in some sweat on Saturday morning getting it taken care of. Hoping to see some good growth and fullness by the end of August.
