How would I go about authenticating DMB's signatures?

OK so my girlfriend got me the album cover booklet thing for BTCS, signed by the entire band (Dave, Carter, Boyd, Stefan, LeRoi).....off ebay...for what I assume was a lot of money. I freaked out when I got it and couldn't believe she found something like that. Well...once she was gone and I looked over it more, the certificate of authenticity that came with it, looks fake. It dosen't specify which item it is authenticating, so you could put it with just about anything and claim its real, and I know thats not how that is done. I'm never going to tell her if its fake or not, but for my own sake, I'd like to know if its real or not.

How would I go about doing that? I know basically how to do it for athletic signatures, my uncle collected them, but for musicians that aren't really mainstream anymore, I have no idea. Any help is appreciated.

A fast way to tell right away is Dave and the band only ever sign in blue or black sharpie. Dave carries a blue pen most of the time at shows, etc. (So vain). I actually asked this question at Fenway 2009 at a meet and greet. Management hands these to the band at meet and greets and they usually carry them on their person.

If it's those gold and silver metallic markers there is a good chance it's fake.

Thank you for that! All signatures are done in blue sharpies. I'm trying to eyeball other signed memorabilia online and compare. From looking at other things they've signed, the signatures look correct (can't find a clear leroi signature though) and if the blue thing is true, then I'm just going to assume its real. I have no intention of ever selling it so looking correct and the blue sharpie thing is good enough for me

In order to guarantee the authenticity of an item, you should contact the leading businesses in the field, they are as follows:

    JSA (James Spence Authentication)
    PSA/DNA
    Beckett

I deal with signed items on a daily basis, and these are the only companies that collectors and dealers will use. To have an item authenticated (letter, sticker, card, full letter, etc) there will be a fee, but it's worth it to have that peace of mind. Good luck.

You can get it officially certified, for a bit of $$$. There are very good fake ones out there, not to worry you but inform you!

I've got a shirt he signed if anybody wanted it by the way - open to offers

The first time I met Dave, it was in Columbus, OH back in 05 and he was walking with his trainer at the time and he pulled out a black sharpie from his track pants.

Ive met them a few times and most signatures I had signed in black sharpie just because thats what I personally liked. I know Ive handed Stefan my sharpie and Carter too and they sign whatever it is and hand it back.

I have a few items I would be willing to sell if anyone is interested...I can post pics or PM me

that's interesting that Dave always carries around a Sharpie. Makes sense, though

Makes it easier to get Family lunatics away from him. "Oh hi there, hey let me sign something for you, don't worry I have marker, there you go, bye now."
