good = adjective; it describes someone or some thing. That's a good cake. You did a good job. Good describes THINGS. I am good.
well = adverve. I did well. I am doing well. that went well. He argued that very well. Well describes HOW something is done or described.
the "I am well" or "I am good" argument is somewhat confusing. Being verbs are like = signs. He is short. He = short. Therefore, in that situation, short is an adjective, because it describes what He is. Good is an adjective; therefore, "I am good" is correct. The only way "well" is used correctly is if you are talking about your health or your actual being, but you must add "doing" or another adverb to go with how you are.
I am good. I = good; adjective.
I am DOING well. Well describes how you are doing, not you; adverb.
It's complicated, but makes sense.
