First off 80's NBA wasn't as deep. It's harder to build sustained success in modern sports with more teams (harder to compile talent), and free agency (harder to keep talent).
Jerry left the Lakers, like Theo did the Red Sox, to see if he can do it somewhere else. Jerry failed and Theo won. Meanwhile the infrastructure Theo left behind allowed the Red Sox to win a 3rd ring that had his finger prints all over it. Theo is 42 and his run with the Cubs is just beginning.

He also turned the Grizzlies from a complete joke that no one wanted to buy, to a consistent playoff team. He didn't hit a home run, but also was never going to have the money to do what Theo was able to do with the Cubs. It's a lot easier to get great talent to Chicago than to a Memphis team that no one wanted.
Jerry West is a key executive member for the Warriors, also. He's too old to run day to day, but his opinion is considered to be the most important to big operational things. He's won SEVEN titles as an NBA executive and is a two time executive of the year. He also set the Lakers up for big success after he left, not his fault they fucked everything up.
