Of course, the Yankees and Dodgers the last few years are great examples

Was just about to post that. It's not the market you're in, it's your front office and manager.

First off 80's NBA wasn't as deep. It's harder to build sustained success in modern sports with more teams (harder to compile talent), and free agency (harder to keep talent).

Jerry left the Lakers, like Theo did the Red Sox, to see if he can do it somewhere else. Jerry failed and Theo won. Meanwhile the infrastructure Theo left behind allowed the Red Sox to win a 3rd ring that had his finger prints all over it. Theo is 42 and his run with the Cubs is just beginning.
He also turned the Grizzlies from a complete joke that no one wanted to buy, to a consistent playoff team. He didn't hit a home run, but also was never going to have the money to do what Theo was able to do with the Cubs. It's a lot easier to get great talent to Chicago than to a Memphis team that no one wanted.

Jerry West is a key executive member for the Warriors, also. He's too old to run day to day, but his opinion is considered to be the most important to big operational things. He's won SEVEN titles as an NBA executive and is a two time executive of the year. He also set the Lakers up for big success after he left, not his fault they fucked everything up.

Logo is the best ever. Long live The Logo.

7 titles in a highly competitive NBA. God Bless the Logo.

Although, I guess it didn't hurt that Dr. Buss was the greatest owner in the history of sports. RIP.

He also went to Miami. Not exactly "Only Cleveland".

He's worse than A-Rod at his worst. He wants to be loved so much, and that makes him the villain. At least Kobe embraced that he was a piece of shit.

didn't the Cubs have the 14th highest payroll? It's not like they are spending a lot- they are drafting well

and at the guy on the last page who said the cubs have historically been good

Smoltz is great. And honestly I enjoy Buck on play by play for baseball. I know a lot of people hate him and when he starts injecting his opinion too much he's annoying but I think he's got a great voice and generally gets too much flak for his work. He's better with baseball than football.

I think joe buck is fine. no problem with him. he pays attention to the game which is all I ask out of a play by play guy. it seems like an obvious thing but there are a lot of announcers who space out (or I imagine are listening intently to a producer, or looking at another screen) and miss something that happens, then spend 30-60 seconds questioning why the players are doing something when it would be clear to them if they had seen the preceding event. weird thing that I notice a lot but of course I can't come up with a concrete example of it right now.

I dont think its out of the question for him to be in the discussion.

No other GM can claim anything near what he has done.

No, ending two historic losing streaks with 2 different teams who are cornerstone franchises in their respective sport.
