Lossless DMB Albums on Apple Music

As many of you already know, yesterday, 06.08.2021, Apple has made available streaming on Lossless quality for a huge number of albums on their catalog.

In addition, some albums (none yet of DMB) will support Dolby Atmos.

Here is a list of DMB Live Albums already available on Lossless Quality (as they appear on European Store, they might be more in Apple US store):

I've been a loyal Spotify user for some time now. Did a free trial of Apple Music last week. This is probably enough to get me to switch over for good. Spatial Audio/Dolby Atmos is really impressive stuff.

Regardless of whether the song is actual on Apple Music in a Dolby Atmos mix, Apple will create a stereo Spatial Stereo audio mix of it: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/06/09...tereo-feature/

What would be the best way to take advantage of the lossless music? I have AirPod Pros, and in the headphone thread I was told that these are better than the regular ones, but still wouldn't be lossless. Would the AirPod Max be worth the investment?

For speakers I have HomePod (two original) and then some of the minis. I also have some Edifier bookshelf speakers. The HomePods were definitely the most expensive, but I don't know if that translates to quality or just the brand/convenience. All this stuff is bluetooth and wireless and streamed, so I feel like there's bound to be quality loss somewhere along the way.

To reap the benefits of lossless audio you would need to be using wired headphones. I will not recommend any to you bc I’m not an expert and several others in this site know FAR more than me.

Anything that’s wireless so Bluetooth/airplay etc is going to lose quality you’re correct

I may be wrong on this (still a bit new to Apple), but I believe AirPlay uses WiFi rather than bluetooth and can in-fact handle lossless audio.

AirPlay can deliver lossless audio at up to 24-bit/48kHz

You'd know better than me what that truly means

How can you tell what albums on Apple Music support Dolby Atmos? I just checked and didn't see a button or stamp stating if it were.

They use Bluetooth, as a test if you disable Wi-Fi in settings AirPods continue to work.

That’s AirPods (which are Bluetooth), but my comment was in relation to AirPlay which allows casting via (I think) WiFi

So, when I ask Siri to play AFTW on my HomePods, it would be lossless?

Apple (to my knowledge) didn't announce it at WWDC, but a lot of rumors going around that Apple plans to update the firmware on pretty much all of their headphones to allow music to be transmitted via airplay (as opposed to bluetooth) so that they will support lossless audio.

This actually makes perfect sense to me. It's very un-Apple like to release a product (here lossless audio), that none of its headphone customers can use - especially when it's included in the price of Apple Music.

In that article is there an important remark about the potential use of WiFi for AirPods:

And if nothing else there’s a question of battery life. Headphones use Bluetooth because it requires so little power. Wi-Fi draws far more, potentially reducing the time between charges to an unusably short amount.

Yea, we'll have to see how they handle that. I'm sure bluetooth will remain an option, and ultimately, I can only see myself using wifi when I am at my house (where I'd obviously have access to a charge).

Just listened to the album Crash, specifically #41 and Two Step with my Air Pod Max's and it was incredible. I didn't even want to go back to the office.

Also if you're wondering what is and what is not covered, the album will say "Lossless" with the little logo thing on it.

I did not, I just listened to that dumb Marvin Gaye thing that Apple has and then immediately jumped to Crash to listen to that....since I think the overall mix is crazy good on that album and there are so many audio nuances to pick up on. I will report back.

If you’re listening on AirPods max, you’re not getting “lossless”. Maybe if you plug the cable into them you’ll get close.

Also, I used my friend's Apple Music login to give this a go...I'm a longtime Spotify Premium user...before you jump ship, Spotify will introduce Spotify HiFi at some point this year, which will have CD-quality, lossless audio. So don't jump ship if you don't want to.

Sure it wasn't to the nth degree of lossless, but it sounded pretty damn awesome. There is a noticeable difference.

    Love those headphones.

What are the Ants audio files using for a DAC? I am looking to get one for my phone but haven’t figured out which one to get yet.

I’m just using the lightning to headphone adapter that came with my iPhone a few years ago.

I think Spotify originally stated that they were going to charge for this. Apple included it at no charge. The other thing is that lossless is different from Dolby Atmos/Spatial Audio and I don't think Spotify has stated it will support it.
