is live release studio editing out of control?

apparently dave hits all his falsettos on #41 on the portugal live trax...the released version that is.

check out 1:35
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cn19wsraXto

^clearly he misses a big one.

Anyway, we all know about the boyd studio re-do of his live in chicago lie in our graves solo (this is the one that bothers me the most...for the longest time i thought it was the best liog ever...then i found out it wasn't real).

Another more recent example is the vocal autotuning that is blatant all over live from radio city.

My questions to you are:

Do you think the band edits/touches up its live releases too much??

By covering up mistakes, is dmb being a little disingenuous?

Yes... the bottom line is, they are releasing shows because they want to make the most money off them (i.e. they were the biggest shows of that year).

Instead of releasing the shows in which the band sounded best. It's a shame.

U can thank KISS, their 70s live album was one of the first to do this...

And no, I think its very shady and deceiving. The point of live trax was to release outstanding, unique, and mindblowing performances. If it sounds that bad that it needs some fine tuning, it shouldnt be a release.

But opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, so take what i say with a grain of salt.

Re: is live release studio editing out of control?

you would think that the band would know that almost all of the fans are going to buy their releases whether their perfect or not, why not just leave them in the truest form?? If i wanted a studio altered song i would buy the studio album, i buy the live releases because there live and not everythings perfect, thats part of it (maybe then they wouldnt release a live album every other month)..... anyway, i haven't heard the live trax release yet, what part of the lyrics do they alter??

Re: is live release studio editing out of control?

Oh come on, DMB still gives us way more raw performances than most bands do. How many rock bands put out double-live albums that are so overproduced and redone in the studio that they don't even list where and when each song was performed? That it's not "Korn Live at MSG 12.2.07" but rather a mismash of various concerts edited together to sound like one concert, and all mistakes, missing vocals, sour notes fixed to the point that its just another studio album with random crowd noise overlapping it.

If you personally hit a dreadful note in concert, and someone said they recorded you and wanted to release it, I'm sure you'd feel some insecurities begin to rise. DMB are artists, therefore they are perfectionists -- yet still, on the whole, they give us a much, much more honest live product than most bands do. A tweaked note or vocal here and there isn't the end of the world or some huge slap in the face. It's the band trying to give us what they consider the best possible product, taking all interests into account (the band's desire to be perfect, and our desire for the raw, most honest capture of a particular performance).

Thank you for bringing this up! I said something about not liking all the Autotune used on Radio City and other release post Listener Supported and people told me I was insane and full of shit.

To answer your question, IMO, they should release shows with performances that don't need to be touched up. And if Dave sings a little sharp or flat here or there, so be it. Look at RR '95 and Listener Supported. They sound awesome and Dave's voice sounds completely natural. His pitch is not spot on in RR but it still sounds awesome because there is no Autotune on it.

    Boo to autotune!!!!!!!

Do you want them to keep their imperfections in the releases or fix them? Cause I strongly remember you throwing a shit-fit over the 'Pay For What You Get' on Warehouse 8 vol. 3 because dave messes up a little bit in the beginning.

if you listen to the aud recording of the crash into from radio city and then the radio city release version, the autotuning is obvious. sad part is, the aud sounds better. i have no idea why they did it

I call dmb the the band that got me into live music for their performances, not this bullshit. I think it's a real shot at the integrity of the band, and one of the few things that REALLY bother me that they do.
