Another summer night in Camden enjoying the great Philly skyline and taking in the wondrous music that is DMB. Early start got me to Campbell's Field at 4:00, but it was an hour before I could get in the lot. Attempted to park in Lot B but that was a zoo and made as much sense as mayo on french fries. The tailgating scene has definitely changed over the years as it seems more and more are occupied with taking it to the extreme with no regard to anything els; not a good sight. Settled into the next lot with a good spot and enjoyed a beverage as the warm afternoon began to cloud over and a nice breeze blew off the river.
The show opener, Dreaming Tree was a real treat and was played to perfection, a real gem. The new stage looked great and they had a some cool lighting throughout, although the sound was a bit dull on the lawn as compared to past years. The next few were an attempt to get some momentum, but it seemed to slow with first time band versions of Gravedigger, So Damn Lucky included, not a big fan of this version of The Maker it didn't light things up. You could tell that Tim would be a big part of this tour and his guitar was not lost in the set(I was hoping he would play some acoustic as well, but I didn't hear it). The energy started to build when Money was played and this is were Tim really shined, sounded great and it was a nice change up and lead into 41. At this point Sister came in and slowed the whole thing down. I like the tune, but it really settles the crowd down. Speaking of the crowd, I usually hang on the lawn because the sound is good and I like being outside. It's getting to be more like a frat party than a concert. There are more people not into the show that it takes away from the music(seeing lots of this in the forum). Things changed again as the band busted into some recent tunes and it seemed to pick them up a bit. Fan favorite Everyday and a solid Cornbread got people jumping and they closed it out with You Might Die Trying. The set list was a bit jumpy, as was the band, as they seem to adjust playing live without Butch; I noticed it and it seemed to effect the overall feel of the show and maybe left people feeling a little empty. The encore changed that as they did a great cover of Neil Young's Hey, Hey, MY,MY, a moment where Dave & Tim were once again feeding off of each other and feeling good. A stellar Tripping Billies sent the folks home mostly happy with the exception of the showers that turned to rain when the show ended. I am always appreciative of the opportunity to part of this unique experience, some are more positive than others, but they are always unpredictable and that is most of the fun and why I like to be part of it. Cheers.

This was my first time seeing Tim Reynolds, and he owned. The band was absolutely on fire throughout the show. The setlist went downhill fast after #41, but even then the performance was for the most part solid. Highlights included the opening four, Jimi Thing, and Tripping Billies.

could've done without the cover songs...let's face it, we don't go see DMB to hear Neil Young & Floyd but overall, a good, energetic show. Any show that opens with Dreaming Tree, you know you're hearing a song you probably won't hear again live!

Our seats were 2 from the aisle on the far right so we could hardly see Carter, Rashawn & LeRoi.
They are extremely long rows so all the people that had to go to the bathrooms CONSTANTLY kept walking past us, I'm not kidding, every freakin song! We decided to just stand in the aisle next to the wall, and that turned into a cool spot, lots of dancing room.

I miss Butch BUT, the addition and use of Tim Reynolds is excellent, and I'm sure will evolve to an even better level as the tour progresses.

The Setlist.....

The Dreaming Tree (A real buzzkill. I'm sorry, but I've heard this three shows in a row now, the full 20 minute version each time. It has not grown on me in the least. To start a show with this made it even worse.)

Gravedigger (Liking the full band version of this one, love the song anyway)

Grey Street (Always love this one)

The Maker (Would have used this as a bathroom break had I not just got back from Dreaming Tree)

So Damn Lucky (Liking the full band version of this one, love the song anyway)

One Sweet World (From this point, things started picking up)

Jimi Thing (Oh Yeah)

Crash Into Me (Me & Sue gettin' our dancing groove on)

Money (Oh Shit moment #1)

#41 (Oh Shit moment #2 - first time I've heard it in Camden/Philly)

Sister (this song holds a special place in our hearts, so we are always happy to hear this)

Everyday (Audience is screaming around us.... very cool)

Corn Bread (Guess this means we'll get #27 tonight)

Louisiana Bayou (This is becoming one of my favorite live songs, the jam at the end it unreal)

You Might Die Trying (Highlight of the night for me as I have a whole new appreciation for this one. Boyd solo, followed by the wicked horns.... Hope he plays it again tonight)

Hey Hey My My (Oh Shit moment #3)

Tripping Billies (Great way to end the show, never get tired of this one)

We were surprised when we left to see it raining, we had no idea. Being near the wall and right next to the exit, we got out fast and were home by 11:30!

This was a Jeckyl and Hyde Show. The high points were amazing. The low points were just a disconnect--seemed to be stemming from a poorly planned setlist. First the high points: Dave's voice sounded ten years younger. The Dreaming Tree opener was really great. JimiThing was really tight. Rashaun and LeRoi played off of each other really well and Tim played an amazing solo. The whole song built an amazing energy. Money into 41 was a rare treat. The encore was top notch. Hey Hey My My was a very solid cover and I was shocked to hear how much Dave could actually sound like Neil Young! It was followed by the best Billies that I've ever heard, maybe better than the version on the Red Rocks CD from 1995. The low points were a midset Sister that seemed to suck the energy right out of the building, a midset Everyday that really didn't connect with the crowd, and last but not least, I can't believe I'm complaining about this, but with the amazing addition of Tim Reynolds, the sound of Boyd's violin got lost in the shuffle. I think the band had a lot of fun together, sometimes so much that they would play for a few minutes with their backs to the crowd. Adding Tim to the mix made them sound less like DMB and more like a rock band. As much as I loved that, one of the parts of the band that I enjoy the most is hearing Boyd play. Last night I felt like I could see him but couldn't hear him. I wonder if it's just me or if other people noticed that. All in all a memorable show. In the amazingly minute chance that anyone with influence w/ the band reads this: Play Sister in the E1 spot, but please don't play it in its current version in the middle of a set.

Would have gotten a 5 but a few things missing. Dreaming Tree, never would have seen it coming on the opener, but just didnt click with the crowd...should have been played later in the show with the night time setting, also the #41 just didn't seem to have the passion it deserved from the band, last the you might die trying closer was not a good idea, but deff made uo for it with the debuing of hey hey my my!

Good show - great songs, but they were all depressing themes about despair and death for the first few songs. Unusual Dreaming Tree opener. Distracted by too many talkers in my section. Pissed that so many people were disrespectful of Dave and blabbing away during Sister.

I don't know what it was... but something was missing. There wasn't the aura of a DMB show.. and anyone here who's been to more than 3 shows can attest to that. My buddies and I were trying to figure out what it was, and we couldn't. Maybe we didn't necessarily appreciate Butch's importance, or maybe the guys were too mellow, or maybe its just early in the tour, or the sound levels were off, or Timmy was too loud, I don't know. What I do know is that through all of those classic songs played during the set (DT, JIMI, 41), CORNBREAD was the best. Make what you want out of this review, but there was something wrong with last night's show.

I'm keeping my hopes up for that aura during tonight's show.

I can honestly say this was my 43rd Dave Show in nine years. This was the first time i have ever walked away disappointd. I figured the show would be a slow one, as it always is when there are back to back nights at the same venue. But when the band came out and opened with the best version of the dreaming tree i ever heard, my hopes were sky keting through the clouds to the heavens. Then it was shot right back
The sound was a little messed up. It sounded like Timmy's amp was way to loud, because i could barely hear any violen or bass. Three Cover Songs in one night ???? come on people. Highlights of the night were One Sweet World, #41, and The Dreaming Tree. Please no more Bayou. We all hope and pray a little two step on Wed Night...

What a show! We got there early for a change. Was able to tailgate for awhile which was fun. It was a great time. Actually saw the last couple songs of the opening band, State Radio. I was curious as to what they would play minus keyboardist Butch Taylor but gained guitarist Tim Reynolds. I thought “Dreaming Tree” was a great opener, beautifully done. Fan favorites, “Gravedigger,” “Grey Street,” and “The Maker” were done to perfection. A wonderful version of “So Damn Lucky” put a major smile on my face and really got me dancing. It was one of my favorites of the night! “One Sweet World,” “Jimi Thing” and “Crash into Me” were
fantastically done as well, pleasing all fans. A terrific surprise of Pink Floyd’s “Money” flat out blew me away. I was stunned and ecstatic at the same time. “#41” sounded great but missed the keyboards. “Everyday” got everybody dancing and jumping. “Corn Bread” was fast and furious and was really a fun song. They really started to begin jamming with Tim Reynolds towards the end which continued on “Louisiana Bayou” and kept on through to a brilliant version of “You Might Die Trying.”
The encore was one of the best encores I’ve ever seen and heard. So unexpected, so remarkable, a cover of Neil Young’s “Hey Hey My My” blew me away to begin the encore. They went into an extraordinary version of “Tripping Billies” to end the show and it was a great way to end the night for an early trip in the summer tour to Camden, NJ. What a celebrated show!

An alright show, Jimi thing jam was painfully long (i think the longest song of that summer tour). At that point it was a buzz killer, a little too much Leroi (RIP). Hey Hey My My, just an ok song to cover, but always enjoy DMB trying new covers. One Sweet World & DT were definately high lights in my opinion.

Well was an incredible day overall, I met a bunch of new friends from this website including one ver special one. I picked up two ants from the airport in the morning, showed them south street and introduced them to a phillycheesesteak. Met up with some a few more ants back at the hotel then went over to campbells field to tailgate.. beig stuck in traffic was pretty fun actually, more than the high school drunken kids in the campbells fieldlot. Got into the show later than I would have liked not to mention a little drunker than i like. BUt once me and my amazing seat partner settled in it was an awesome time. Missed 1/2 of the Dreamingtree Opener but I actually see that pretty reguarly so I'll live. Grave Digger was alright, never heard it full band so it was cool. Grey Street picked up the energy once again and is always one of my favs. At this time I'm drinking some capt and really grooving, My new friend was so much fun to dance and sing with. There was this kid in front of me who was definitly feeling the show, dancing all crazy showing us love, and kind of mocking the two people next to him and in front of us for just sittingtheir like statues. I mean how do yujust sit there at a dave show? Next wqas the Maker.. ahh ordinary, so damn lucky.. i like this song and full band made it better if you ask me. A suprising mid set One Sweet World which is another song im a huge fan of kept me grooving. Bam than an incredible Jimi thing... Timmy killed it..Next Crash Into me.. this was so awesome since it was exactly what i was doing with my new found friend...Acover of Pink FLoyd's Money followed which was really good and I dig that song..Then the always touching #41 which may be my fav all time song.. Probably the musical highlight of the show for me since I love it so much, that or Jimi. Then sister, most people kind of sighed when he played it but i enjoyed it as it's a heartfelt song. Every day next, while not the biggest fan, i still do like it live with everyone singing and what not. Cornbread followed .. always a fun one. Bayou was after that.. Bayou is funny I never get excited wen it starts but by time its over withboyd kicking some ass I always end up feeling it. YMDT was the main set closer... Much like Bayou I must admit for me.. It starts and im like ah not bad by the time its over im rocking and loving it. Encore time .. whats it gonnabe whats it gonna be.. wait i know this song kind of..hey hey , my my.. sounds like a neil young song or something... thats exactly what it was and it rocked pretty tight.. then tripping billies which is always one of my favs and a great way o clse out the night cause afterall we should all eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die and thats what we did after the show continued to eat drink and be merry.... luckily we didnt die cause night 2 was still ahead

I have been going to shows since 1996, and have seen shows before Butch. After seeing tonights show without Butch, once more, DMB is on a whole different level musically. Some of the songs are shorter (JT, LB, DT), but in a good way because they do not drag out. The songs sound more crisp, tighter, and powerful. There was really not a dull moment the entire show. If one looked at the setlist, then one might point to a midset Sister. However, Tim adds a lot to this song. I am really diggin the cover songs this year, and I really hope they add a new cover at each of the shows. Also, YMDT is really evolving, and is turning out to be a true closer

The last time I saw DMB live was at the Live 8 concert in early July 2005 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and it was their performance there that got me interested in the band. I own all their studio albums, and the majority of their live albums and a heap of fan recordings from previous shows, and finally I got to pickin' up a ticket to see this band live again.

Others have already mentioned the highlights of this show, but I'll reiterate, since it deserves to be mentioned again:

Tim's there. Not only do I get to see DMB live for the first time in three years, I get to see them with Tim Mofo' Reynolds.

Whoever it was that gave Tim an electric guitar for the show, that was a damn good idea. Props. These other folks who have been commenting on Tim's presence (and Butch's absence) are right-on: Tim fills in for Butch splendidly.

Opening with Dreaming Tree was absolutely wonderful. Didn't expect that in the setlist at all, much less as the opener, but it was SUCH a good choice. Rashawn was great with his solo -- I'm really glad he's part of the band now.

Hearing the Some Devil songs with the full band was also great; since I don't have any recordings of full-band versions, for my first listen it was a real treat to hear 'em played with the full band live instead of hearing a recording.

Money, the Pink Floyd cover, was spectacularly executed, and another didn't-see-it-coming, which was great.

Might be the best version of Cornbread I've heard from this band. Good energy.

I agree with user 41 Step's comments about Jimi Thing. That was easily the highlight of the show for me. Fucking best jam I've ever heard. Rashawn and Leroi going at it for several minutes, with Carter reading their solos and drumming appropriately (that man is a demigod at the drums, I swear), into a spectacular jam from Tim. Blew me away.

I would have liked to hear either Shotgun or Two Step, but, hell, I got #41 on the first night of two nights, and I'll bet they're saving Two Step for the encore tomorrow night (another DDTW opener tomorrow, anyone?). If they play the first Shotgun of the summer tomorrow, I'll be kickin' myself in the pants, but that'll just be a lesson for me to buy tickets for both nights in Camden next year.

Four out of five stars. You best believe I'ma see this band live again the next chance I get.

The best to the rest of you fans out there -- have a great summer! Get your DMB fix in while it's hot, and from the way this set went tonight, this band is RED HOT right now!

Dreaming Tree openers are my favorite, so I was thrilled with this one; and the first 5 or so songs set up the show to be a great one. But instead, the setlist was mainly old faithful DMB songs, which can make for a really good show, but rarely a great one. Boyd was really into the whole night, and the rest of the band had their moments of extra enthusiasm. On a side/personal note, I think Tim overplayed a little too much, especially with the hard distortion (Tripping Billies). I love his spaceship sounds and his typical tone, but i think he pushed it too far there

Loved the first five songs, but after that the show kind of dragged along. Don't get me wrong, Money was freakin' sweet and the full band Some Devil songs were a treat, but the guys just seemed like they were struggling through most of the set. They didn't congeal well together on the outros of most songs...i.e. we never had the big crowd-stomping, cathartic moments that everyone waits for. The breakdowns also sounded odd...they never broke into their typical familiar jams. I'd chalk it up to the fact that it's just the beginning of the tour.

Keeping my hopes up for tomorrow night...

Long, long, long-time DMB Fan who had never been to a show for about a million reasons that mostly suck (in retrospect). But this was the first one, and I'll remember it! Great concert....looking forward to many more this year. (Had been listening to Dave since sophomore year in high school when it took over at our parties. Got to love the mid 90s...)

Dave didn't seem too into it, my least favorite show I've been to. Still enjoyed it tremendously though.
